Tony Aspler’s impressions after his visit in our winery.

Saturday, September 25 2010: Awoke to rain. Shopped for some jewellery for Deborah. Dino bargained with the store owner. Petro picked us up and we drove an hour to Avantis Estate in the Evia region. Apostolos Mountrichas and his wife Lenga are both oenologists. They produce 200,000, half of which are red. They had twins a year ago. Apostolos's grandfather's stone house is now the winery.

Avantis Estate Malagousia 2010 (tank sample – to be bottled in one month):

Avantis Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2010 (tank sample):

Avantis Estate M Mavrokoudoura 2007 (an ancient local variety, unique to this winery; 1000 bottles a year):
dense ruby; rustic, plum and dark chocolate nose; full-bodied, earthy, licorice, plum and blackberry flavours. Intense and rich on the palate with a warm alcoholic finish. (88)
Avantis Estate Agios Chronos Syrah Viognier 2007:
dense purple black; floral, blackberry, herbal note; rich, full-bodied, intense blackberry, firmly structured; well integrated oak; sweet fruit, dark chocolate. A big chewy wine with mellow tannins and great length (91)
Avantis Estate Collection Syrah 2007 (400 – 1000 bottles each year, from a single vineyard):
dense purple-black; toasted herbs, blackberry, vanilla oak; concentrated blackberry, peppery and dark chocolate; rich and full on the palate. Cinnamon and floral notes. A big, powerful wine. Needs time. (90++)

Apostolos and his wife Legna have arranged a fish lunch at Akrogiali restaurant by the shore of the Eroikos gulf, the only tidal waters in Greece, Dino says. We drink Avantis Estate Malagousia 2009 with a series of dishes – sea snails in vinegar, and olive oil, oysters, clams, steamed mussels and mussels in lemon sauce, sea urchins and finally steamed lobster. With the lobster, Avantis Estate Malagousia 2009 aged 4 months Ζin oak. For dessert, which Petros bought for me to taste, a true Greek sweet, galaktoboureko (phyllo pastry with a sweet creamy filling made with eggs, butter, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and milk (delicious)). With this, Avantis Estate Melitis Muscat Blanc (N/V) and Avantis Estate Melitis Collection 1996

92 Avantis: 2006 Central Greece Syrah from a winery founded in 1994 on the hot southern tip of Evia, the island just off the eastern coast of Greece, this is a gigantic syrah.

It needs at least a day of air to begin to show what’s behind the oak, but it’s worth the wait, revealing a cache of tightly packed plums and ripe red raspberries, all lightly bound in cocoa richness. A slight floral note comes up on the finish, alongside the black pepper spice, a surprisingly elegant ending given the beginning. Cellar it a few years, then open with a thick-cut ribeye.

Avantis Estate Syrah 2006 (the wine of the night – richly extracted, sweet blackberry fruit; very New World

STATUS 2/2006

No wine list can be complete unless there is a Muscat in it. We have chosen an excellent sample of this variety (Avantis Melitis), not from Samos or Limnos but Euboea. Typical nose, not too sweet and, what’s more, a Muscat embraced by aging in the barrel.

Gazette - CANADA

Syrah 2004, Avantis, Mountrihas Estate: Just to drive in the point, here's another intriguing Greek wine that has forced me to rethink my wine travels for 2008. This time the grape is syrah - and for such a hot climate, where you would expect it to have that New World jam-styled creaminess, instead it is much closer to northern Rhône elegance. Fine tannins, it has this peculiar menthol-rosemary bouquet mixed with blueberries and red peppercorns - on top of an old saddle. This is not a wine to sip poolside; it screams for a rack of lamb. Drink now-2010. Food pairing: Rack of lamb with Provence herbs.

A young couple of oenologists who love wine and whose fresh ideas and care result to the production of fine wines.

I respect Apostolos Mountrichas very much. In the last few years he has come up with excellent products, without any pomposity. Moreover, the quality of his wines is getting higher and higher.

EY ZIN Wine Magazine 11/2006

Apostolos Mountricha’s secret must be, more or less, what makes a producer succesfull ; eagerness for quality, constant development and hard work.

Gourmet Magazine – Elephterotypia 3/2005

It is his …Syrah (turn)
Self-knowledge, personal sacrifices and hard work have put Avantis Estate (Mountrichas) high up in the list of Greek producers of quality wines, on top of minor producers – I have say – as he makes only 90000 bottles a year
